What We Do
Our main purpose is, first and foremost, the recording and maintenance of records. Not only do we receive records daily to record, but we also receive record updates from Raleigh and constantly work to ensure quality control. These new records and updates need to be properly processed so that researchers can locate a record within due diligence while conducting a search of any type. Processes include, but are not limited to:
- Updating vital records;
- Indexing all records accurately and promptly to maintain search result integrity;
- Preserving the county’s oldest records through modern techniques and scientifically sound processes;
- Various ongoing projects that promote the efficiency and accessibility of the records.
We also issue marriage licenses, commission notary oaths, provide certified copies of records in our office, and assist the public with basic navigation of the records.
Our office also works closely with various other county departments such as the Tax Department, Planning & Inspections and Environmental Health to help ensure the accuracy of property ownership and parcel information. Each office is dependent upon information sent and retrieved timely and accurately.
