Marriage Licenses
 Couples who wish to obtain a marriage license in Rockingham County may complete their application below or complete it in person at the Rockingham County Register of Deeds office.

MARRIAGE LICENSE APPLICATION


Please Note: the online application only works using the Internet Explorer Browser. Please do not try to submit an application using Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari.

 


Issued: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM. No appointment is necessary. Both applicants must appear at the office to complete the application process.


Fee: $61.00 = License ($60) + Keepsake Copy ($1). Cash, check, or money order only.

 

Marriage licenses may be used in any North Carolina county within sixty (60) days of issuance. The license must be returned to the county that issued the license within ten (10) days after the marriage has been performed.*




 For Applicants Ages 21+:

  1. Valid identification, such as:
    • State Driver's License
    • State-issued Identification
    • Passport
    • Military I.D.
  2. Your social security number.
  3. If previously divorced, you must provide the month and year of your last divorce. If the divorce was finalized within 30 days of applying for the marriage license, the applicant must provide a copy of the divorce decree. The Rockingham County Register of Deeds does not handle divorces. To obtain information about divorce proceedings occurring in Rockingham County, contact the Clerk of Court (336-634-6000).

Applicants Ages 18-20:

  1. Certified copy of your birth certificate in English or a notarized translation must be provided. If translated, bring both the original and the notarized translated copy.
  2. Valid identification, such as:
    • State Driver's License 
    • State-issued Identification
    • Passport
    • Military I.D.
  3. Your social security number.
  4. If previously divorced, you must provide the month and year of your last divorce.   3. Your social security number.
  4. A written consent to the marriage must be filed with the Register of Deeds, said consent having been signed by (1) a parent having full or joint legal custody of the underage party; or (2) by a person, agency, or institution having legal custody or serving as a guardian of the underage party. Proof of custody or guardianship is required. Proper identification is required. The consent form is available at the Register of Deeds office.

Applicants Age 15:

  2. Valid identification, such as:

    • State-issued Identification
    • Passport
    • Military I.D.
  3. Your social security number. 
  4. A written consent to the marriage must be filed with the Register of Deeds, said consent having been signed by (1) a parent having full or joint legal custody of the underage party; or (2) by a person, agency, or institution having legal custody or serving as a guardian of the underage party. Proof of custody or guardianship is required. Proper identification is required. The consent form is available at the Register of Deeds office.
  5. Certified court order authorizing the marriage signed by the District Court Judge.

Applicants Under Age 15:

It is unlawful and you cannot marry in North Carolina.


IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER

G.S. 51-8 requires each applicant for a marriage license to furnish their Social Security number. If an applicant does not have a Social Security number and is ineligible to obtain one, the applicant must complete an affidavit. You can bring the completed, notarized form with you or we will provide one for you. 


IF ONE APPLICANT IS UNABLE TO APPEAR

If one applicant is not able to appear in person due to hardship (such as disability or military service), please contact our office to relay circumstances and we will do our best to work with you.



OFFICIANTS WHO CAN PERFORM MARRIAGES 

Marriages in North Carolina may be performed pursuant to G.S. 51-1 by:

  • An ordained minister of any religious denomination
  • A minister authorized by a church
  • A magistrate (contact a magistrate directly (336-634-0210) to confirm hours of operation and fees)
  • In accordance with any mode of solemnization recognized by any religious denomination, or federally or state recognized Indian Nation or Tribe

It is unlawful to solemnize a marriage in North Carolina without a completed marriage license issued by the Register of Deeds office. 


The person solemnizing the marriage shall complete the license and return both sheets to the Register of Deeds office that issued the license. These individuals have 10 days to return the license.

CHANGING YOUR LAST NAME

You will need:

  • One (1) certified copy of your marriage license. Order it here
  • Other documentation as required by the Social Security Administration and the NC DMV.
After applying for a new Social Security card, you should wait a minimum of 24 hours before going to the DMV to update your driver's license.


PROHIBITED MARRIAGES

  • A couple may not marry when one of the parties is married to another person.
  • Divorces must be final (absolute divorce).
  • Marriages between direct descendants, such as parent-child, brother and sister, uncle and niece, or aunt and nephew relationship by half or whole blood is prohibited. Marriage between cousins is permitted, but not double first cousins.


*Failure to do so may result in the payment of $200 to any person who sues, and shall be guilty of a Class I misdemeanor.
